As the senior member of Paul Smith’s College faculty, Professor Don Kirche has a long association with Paul Smiths, not just as a math teacher of 40 years. Don’s father, Professor Charles Kirche, also taught math at the college beginning with its first year class in 1946 and returning in the early 1980s. Among Professor Charles Kirche’s notable students was Steve Ross who built the Time Warner business empire.
In addition to teaching math, Charles Kirche was caretaker at the famous Pine Tree Point Camp on Upper St. Regis (founded by Frederick William Vanderbilt), taking over from his father at the camp in 1960. Don also helped his dad, working at the camp in high school, where Lydia Martin Smith’s brother was also a caretaker prior to Don’s grandfather assuming the position.
