Arthur Niederbuhl

Arthur Niederbuhl was born 1925. A year after he was born, his father got TB and the family moved to Saranac Lake where Art’s father took the cure. They lived at the Cantwell Estates on Old Military Rd, where many other TB families lived. During the interview, Art shares about what it was like to grow up in Saranac Lake. Art graduated from Saranac Lake High School where he played football, hockey, baseball, and ran track. Art enlisted in the Navy before graduating high school. He served active duty during WWII, from 1943 to 1946. He remained in the reserves until 1961. Art attended St. Lawrence University and the Tuck-Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth. In the summer of 1948, Art married his high school sweetheart Norma Curran. Art and Norma operated Norman’s Wholesale Grocery. During this interview, Art spoke about local businesses and Norma shared a little about her own history during this interview. Art and Norma had seven children together, one of whom passed away in infancy. Norma passed away on January 6, 2015, and Art passed on January 10, 2018.
